Some of the mushers of the 2011 Beargrease Sled Dog Marathon have reached the Gunflint Trail. Jamie Nelson was the first to reach the Trail Center checkpoint and she will receive a $2000 prize thanks to Trail Center and the Cook County Events and Visitor Bureau. She arrived on the Gunflint Trail about 3:23pm and is currently in 4th place.
Six of the remaining thirteen teams are resting at Trail Center half-way up the Gunflint Trail. Teams are required to take a mandatory layover along the Beargrease route and Trail Center is one of them.
Members of the Gunflint Trail Volunteer Fire Department are working the road crossings so teams have safe passage. Long hours are spent waiting for all of the dog teams to make their way up to Gunflint Lake and then back down to Grand Marais, Minnesota.
The mid-distance race ended early this morning. Friends from Black Magic Kennels took 6th and 11th place, congratulations Tara McGovern and Mary Black. Mary is the co-founder of Mush for a Cure so we work closely together and Tara is a star volunteer for the event.
The Beargrease is an exciting event but not half as much fun as the Mush for a Cure which will be March 11th and 12th on the Gunflint Trail.
