Voyageur Hudson Bay Expedition Crew Celebrates Canada Day & Completing Their Paddling Time on Lake Winnipeg, July 1st, 2011

Saturday, July 2, 2011 by Sue prom
After spending a short night camped just beyond Big Black River, Manitoba on Lake Winnipeg the Voyageur Hudson Bay Expedition Crew continued along on their journey.

From the Web... Black River is located 138 kilometres northeast of Winnipeg and approximately 36 kilometres north of the community of Powerview/Pinefalls, Manitoba. The population of the First Nation is 980 and the primary language used is Ojibwe. The Community has a window plant, water treatment facility, truss plant, health centre, Head Start Program and a general store/gas bar. The Majority of homes are single detached and located within a one-mile radius of the government offices and schools. The community is accessible year round by a paved road, which intersects PTH 304 (6.4 km to the east).

The Hudson Bay Crew rested for less than five hours before embarking on another long day of paddling.  They began paddling around 5 in the morning and didn't stop until after 10 pm so they canoed for over 15 hours.  They paddled over 41 miles on Lake Winnipeg and didn't quit until they reached the end of the big lake.

The Crew started on the South terminus of Lake Winnipeg on the 20th of June.  I heard talk about wanting to travel from the south end to the north end in 10 days.  It took them a little bit more than that but I am happy to say they are done paddling on Lake Winnipeg.
Even better than fireworks completing their time on Lake Winnipeg is a great way to celebrate Canada Day.  Way to Go Guys!

All Day Celebration and off of Lake Winnipeg on Canada Day!

Congrats on making it off the big lake, guys. You have us on the edge of our seats waiting for you to fill in the blanks of what got in the way of your paddling and how the super long days were.

Our planning for the Desolation Wilderness backpacking trek the end of July is coming along. Our crew is now down to five. But we're feeling confident about the trip, which will end up being 65 miles instead of the 50 miles we initially thought it would be. Sue Prom put us in touch with the company that provisioned your expedition with freeze dried food. That will lighten our load.

It has been a lot of fun watching your progress, guys. Great job!

Sue, thanks for continuing to write up these blog posts about their trip. I think you got one detail wrong in this post...the town of Black River you mentioned is actually much farther south, near the Winnipeg River. From what I can tell, there isn't any substantial community on the Big Black River's mouth into Lake Winnipeg.
